Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips [to keep me from speaking thoughtlessly]. - Psalm 141:3 (AMP)

Not in Your Own Strength
Scripture
One of the most important lessons about the power of our words is to rely on God’s grace and strength to help you change your habits and the way you speak. James 5:8 (AMPC) says, The human tongue can be tamed by no man. It is a restless (undisciplined, irreconcilable) evil, full of deadly poison. This verse tells us that we can’t tame our tongue by ourselves—we need God’s help.
Yes, we have our part—God will not do it all for us. We must learn to discipline our own mouths and take responsibility for what comes out of them. However, if we try to do it all on our own, apart from God’s grace, we will simply end up frustrated.
If you want to see positive changes in the way you think and speak, I encourage you to regularly spend time reading and studying God’s Word and talking to Him in prayer. Even if it’s only for five or ten minutes at first, take some time each day to renew your mind with what the Lord says about you. Begin your day by asking for His help.

“We can live the joyful, overcoming life God has for us when we realize God helps those who know they cannot help themselves—those who realize they are totally dependent on Him and are grateful that He will provide everything they need.”
