How to Fight Your Invisible Foe @tag1>
Embracing the Spiritual Arsenal Against Invisible Foes @tag2>
I once received a letter from a woman whose four-year-old son was playing superheroes with his cousins. When one of them exclaimed, “I’m Superman!” Another said, “I’m Superwoman!” But her son proudly wielded his imaginary sword and proclaimed, “I’m Joyce Meyer!”
What a compliment! That child saw something in me that he thought was “super,” and it was simply a result of the work God has done in my life through His Holy Spirit.
I think it’s interesting that this young man’s superhero gear included a sword. Ephesians 6:17 says that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God!
We’re Fighting an Invisible Foe
Whether we view ourselves as soldiers or superheroes, our warfare isn’t against flesh and blood, it’s against the spiritual forces of evil (see Ephesians 6:12). But we don’t have to fear our enemy…because God has given us all we need in Christ to stand firm against him (see Ephesians 6:13-18).
In this spiritual war, we are subjected to unrelenting attacks in our thoughts, such as worry, fear, doubt and other concerns.
Our part in the battle is to stand firm believing that God is who He says He is, and we are who He says we are…new creations in Christ, full of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
You Are Never Alone
The Holy Spirit, who lives within you, can lead you successfully through every battle you face. Because anything He asks you to do, He will provide a way to do. The key is to learn to cooperate with Him.
When the enemy comes against you, remember that Almighty God is on your side! And you are more than a conqueror in Christ who loves you! (See Romans 8:31, 37.)
Get Fully Armed for the Battle
God’s Word tells us that we have both offensive and defensive equipment to use against the enemy.
Our offense is the Word of God; the sword of the Spirit, which allows us to destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
Our defense is the armor of God which allows us to stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). Our armor is vitally important to our success.
- The belt of truth
- The breastplate of righteousness
- The shoes of the readiness of the gospel of peace
- The shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one
- The helmet of salvation
I encourage you to meditate on these gifts and the greatness and goodness of God. As you do so, you will become more aware that He’s with you…and that He has already given you the victory you seek.
