Set Your Rudder in the Right Direction

Scripture

He who guards his mouth and his tongue guards himself from troubles. - Proverbs 21:23 (AMP)

The book of James has a lot to teach us about the power of words. James 3:3-5 (NIV) says, When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts....

Wow! Just like the bit in a horse’s mouth or the tiny rudder on a ship, our words have the ability to impact the entire course of our lives. Thankfully, there is another side to this. With God’s help, that same little tongue can be turned toward Him and used for His purposes. So, if you’re not happy with where you’re going, you can start speaking good things right now and change the direction of your life.

“I have believed for years that if I can hold my tongue and remain emotionally stable during difficulty, then I am honoring God and letting the devil know he is not going to control me.”

Study Suggestion

Have you fallen into the habit of talking too much about your problems and not enough about the good things God has done in your life? Read Psalm 103:1-5 and then write a short prayer asking God to help you focus more on all the ways He’s meeting your needs.
