PROVERBS 16: FOLLOW GOD, DON’T ASK HIM TO FOLLOW YOU

Be Ready to Change Directions If He Leads You to Do So

Scripture

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. - Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

Proverbs 16 includes three references to the fact that people often make their own plans without consulting the Lord, who is ultimately in control (vv. 1, 9, 25). Proverbs 16:1 and 16:9 make clear that only the Lord knows what we should do and where we should go, while verse 25 warns us that the way that may seem right leads to a negative outcome.

When we consider how to live our lives, we don’t want input from people who do not seek wisdom and thoroughly consider the insights they offer us. If we are sincere about wanting good, solid input, we also do not want people to simply say, “Well, what do you want to do?” The question should not be, “What do I want to do?” but, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”

I have learned over the years that when I pray for something that God’s Word does not specifically mention, I always add, “And Lord, please don’t give it to me if it is not Your will.” Experience has taught me that getting my way is a mistake if what I want doesn’t agree with what God wants. Let’s remember the advice of King Solomon and acknowledge God in all of our ways so He will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:6).

Always submit your plans to God and be ready to change directions if He leads you to do so.
