The Problem with Pride @tag1>
Adapted from Beginning Your Day God’s Way
Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls.
In Proverbs 6:16–19, God lists seven things He hates—and one of those things is pride, which the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition defines as …the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others… (Proverbs 6:17 AMPC). Since God hates pride, we must be diligent in preventing it from taking root in our minds and in our lives.
The antidote to pride is humility, which is defined as “freedom from pride” and “a modest estimation of your own worth.” It doesn’t mean you think lowly of yourself; it means you are very careful not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to.
Unlike a prideful person, a humble person is quick to forgive and slow to take offense, and trusts God to right any wrongs. A humble person doesn’t brag but always gives God the glory. And a humble person is patient, joyfully waiting on God, and obedient in whatever instructions He gives.
God has chosen to work through us to accomplish His purposes here on earth. Everything we are, every talent we possess, and every good thing that we do is because of Him, our Creator. How humbling!
Prayer of the Day: God, help me maintain the right attitude about myself. When I am tempted to be independent, draw me closer to You. When I am tempted to boast, remind me to give thanks instead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
