10 Ways to Have a Peaceful Christmas @tag1>
A few simple "recipes" for a less stressful, more fulfilling celebration! @tag2>
Christmas is a beautiful and amazing time of the year—it’s a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus!
One of the ways we celebrate is by giving and receiving gifts, and this can be a good thing. However, sometimes we get so wrapped up in all of the buying and the planning that it steals the joy and simplicity of the holiday.
I think we’ve all been there. It’s easy to get sidetracked by the “busyness” of Christmas. Then, when the day finally arrives, we’re unable to enjoy it. That’s why we need to step back and remember what Christmas is all about. The true joy of Christmas is not found in presents, but in God’s presence (Psalm 16:11).
In fact, I’ve discovered that it’s in God’s presence where the magic of Christmas really comes alive! So, this year, I encourage you to slow down, get quiet, and take time to soak in God’s amazing presence in the midst of all the busyness.
Sure, problems will arise and people will occasionally frustrate or disappoint you. There’s no way to be alive and avoid these things! But you can balance out the bad with the good by spending quality time with God and setting aside time to indulge in a few of the simpler pleasures of the season.
If you find yourself struggling with too much intensity, try a few of these simple “recipes” for a less stressful, more fulfilling celebration.
1. Take a deep breath.
When things get hectic, take a few moments to talk to God and receive His peace and refreshment.
2. Read something uplifting.
Proverbs 4:20-22 says, …Turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body (NIV).
God’s Word is alive and full of power—and it has the ability to revive and refresh you when you get weary and worn out!
3. Listen to praise and worship music.
Psalm 100:2 encourages us to …worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs (NIV).
Worshiping God is the quickest way to make your day better because you invite His joy and presence into your life. Even while you’re wrapping gifts, cleaning or baking, you can use music to help set a peaceful atmosphere.
4. Go to bed on time (maybe even a little early).
Psalm 127:2 (ESV) says, It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Some of the simplest, most practical things make the greatest difference. I know when we have a lot to do, we’re tempted to push our boundaries to fit it all in. But in the end, a good night’s sleep will help us accomplish so much more the next day!
5. Spend time with a close friend.
Galatians 6:2 says, Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (NIV).
When we get extra busy, we sometimes forget to do the things that bring us joy and help us relax...like spending time with someone we enjoy. Even if it’s just for a few minutes, take a break from what you are doing and call a friend. Catch up on what they are doing and allow yourself to simply relax.
6. Enjoy a delicious, nutritious meal.
Third John 1:2 says, Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well (NIV).
When we’re pressed for time, it’s easy to let good habits fall to the side. However, taking a little time to eat something that’s nutritious—something you like—will pay dividends in the end!
7. Write down your worries…then throw them away.
First Peter 5:7 (NIV) says, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Something that starts out as a fun activity—like buying gifts or planning Christmas dinner—can quickly turn into just another burden on our to-do list. This year, when you feel worry and anxiety creeping in, stop for a moment and say, “God, I refuse to worry. Right now, I give you all my anxiety and cares, and I ask You to fill my heart with Your peace.”
8. Make a list of things you’re thankful for.
First Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV) says, Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
There’s a reason why people say, “Count your blessings.” It’s because maintaining a thankful heart has the ability to fill our lives with joy and completely change our perspective. This Christmas season, I challenge you to thank God for something each and every day.
9. Get outdoors for a while.
Psalm 19:1 says, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands (NIV).
Sometimes we can forget just how refreshing it is to step outside, get some fresh air, and even go for a short walk. I know that when I’m busy working, I can get so focused that I forget to even get up and move around! But these little breaks are so valuable, and being outdoors has a way of refreshing us mentally and physically.
10. Be playful and laugh a lot!
As I mentioned at the beginning, the joy of Christmas can get quenched by all of the busyness. That’s why we have to be intentional about making time to simply laugh and have fun.
Proverbs 17:22 says, A cheerful heart is good medicine…(NIV). I encourage you to take a fun, lighthearted approach to everything you do this holiday season. As you do, even the mundane tasks can become enjoyable…and you’ll bring joy to everyone else around you.
