Scripture

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.Romans 12:16 (ESV)

Spending time with family and friends is a big part of the Thanksgiving holiday. So, loving people and truly enjoying those relationships is important. Loving others is one of the most important things we can do.

Jesus said, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. (John 13:34 ESV).

We were created by God to have relationships and some of the greatest joys in our life can be found in our connection with others—with our spouse, our friends, our children and grandchildren, coworkers and neighbors. Healthy relationships bring us new strength and true joy.

But some relationships can be more difficult, and you may be asking yourself, How can I get along better with those people? How can I love others the way God loves me? How can I make a struggling relationship better?

There are several different keys to building better relationships. But one thing in particular is that God always takes care of you when you put the needs of others ahead of your own.

Selfishness destroys a relationship—but selflessness makes it thrive. It’s not always easy to do. Many times, other people don’t act in a way that we want or expect them to.

But if you’ll look for ways to bless others, your relationships will improve. And the amazing result is, God will bless you in return.

Here are a few practical examples for Thanksgiving week. . .

  • Take a meal to someone in need.
  • Listen—sometimes it’s best to just let the other person talk.
  • Call a friend or family member and tell them why you are thankful for them.

There are so many different ways you can be selfless. And there is great joy in looking for new, creative ways to be a blessing.

You can make every day during this Thanksgiving season more enjoyable and memorable by taking even just a few minutes each day to think about what you can do to help someone else.

Owe nothing to anyone except to love and seek the best for one another; for he who [unselfishly] loves his neighbor has fulfilled the [essence of the] law [relating to one’s fellowman].Romans 13:8 (AMP)

Once you've been reduced to love, you'll have no trouble establishing and maintaining good, healthy relationships with others. Your primary goal in life will be to put the wishes of others before your own. — Joyce
