Say It Like You Mean It

Did you know that God’s Word is powerful?

We’ve all had days when circumstances have left us weary and upset, or had times that have felt hopeless. But when life hits hard, one of my favorite verses written by King David says, I will declare the decree of the Lord…. (Psalm 2:7 AMPC). Now, decree means “written down,” and declare means “open your mouth.” And so there’s power in confessing God’s Word over your life, family and future.

It’s that principle that David follows—of learning to confess God’s Word out loud—that has been life-changing for me. Because when we meditate on His Word by speaking out and declaring what He says about us, we are releasing our faith and cooperating with Him to see His good plans come to pass in our lives.

God’s Word Changes Things

When I first began studying this principle, I was a terribly negative person. But God began to show me how harmful negativity can be. And as I took action to stop thinking and speaking negative things, I actually became happier at first.

After a while though, I felt like my circumstances really weren’t that different. I asked the Lord about it, and He spoke to my heart and said, “You have stopped saying negative things, but you are not saying anything positive.”

So, I decided to make a list of the things that were rightfully mine according to the Word of God. And twice a day for approximately six months, I spoke those truths out loud. I wasn’t talking to anyone else—I was simply declaring the Word of God over my own life. Now, I’m not telling you to just make up stuff that you want, like: “I’m going to be a gazillionaire,” or “I’m going to marry the President.”

I’m talking about saying things like:

“I am a new creature in Christ: old things have passed away, behold, all things are new!” (See 2 Corinthians 5:17.)

“I don’t have a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.” (See 2 Timothy 1:7.)

“I cast all my care on the Lord for He cares for me.” (See 1 Peter 5:7.)

“I am a believer, not a doubter.” (See Mark 5:36.)

Changes in my life didn’t come overnight, but gradually I did see them. And not only has every single thing on my list come to pass, but to this day I continue to see good results when I speak my faith and talk in agreement with God. Confessing God’s Word has become a regular part of my daily life. In fact, it’s one of the most important parts of my walk with God. And the truth is, I don’t believe I’d be where I am today without this powerful biblical principle!

Walk with God

Moving forward, I want you to confess the Word of God out loud throughout the day as the Holy Spirit prompts you. Each time a thought comes to your mind that doesn’t agree with God’s Word, declare the truth of Scripture out loud, and you will find the wrong thought disappearing. As I like to say: What’s in the heart comes out the mouth. Start with right thinking, and it will turn into right speaking.

Today, I look at my list of confessions and it absolutely amazes me how many of the things that I wrote on it have come to pass—things that seemed impossible at the time! And so much of it has to do with getting in agreement with God and consistently declaring His will over my life.

Amos 3:3 (AMPC) says, Do two walk together except they make an appointment and have agreed? We cannot walk with God concerning His plan for our lives unless we are willing to agree with Him—in our hearts and with our words.

I encourage you to speak God’s Word out loud daily. Get in agreement with Him and become His mouthpiece, declaring the good things He has in store for you. As you do, I believe you will be strengthened in faith...and have the joy of witnessing God’s goodness and power in every area of your life.
