More Than We Ever Dreamed

Cholera ran rampant at Makambako Secondary School in the Njombe District of Tanzania, Africa. Every day was a dangerous roulette of disease. It wasn’t a question of if the children would become ill—it was a matter of when.

Like most schools in the area, the children at the Makambako school spent hours collecting water each day, which cut into precious classroom time. But it was their only hope for survival—despite the fact that the river water is teeming with disease due to human and animal waste pollution.

But you helped to change it all in March when Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions drilled a new borewell near the school. Now, the children and the entire community have unlimited access to clean water for the first time in their lives.

During the dedication service for the well, nearly 500 students and adults accepted Jesus into their hearts after hearing the Gospel!

So many people were impacted by the new well—both the students who missed classroom time just to go to the river each day, and those who wished they could help their peers. Thirteen-year-old Doreen is one of the recipients. Due to a disability, she has never been able to assist her classmates in their search for water.

“Today you have changed our school forever!” Doreen declared. “Now water is not limited or seasonal. I was unable to help my fellow students collect water, but now I can be part of everything! Thank you, we love you!”

60 Years of Waiting

Not far away in the Mufindi District of Tanzania, the Kimengembasi Secondary School and village were experiencing the devastating effects of typhoid due to contaminated water.

One of the local residents, Mrs. Mdeme, has lived in the area for all of her 60 years. She explained that she started collecting water for her family when she was only 5 years old. The almost 2-mile trek to the nearest water source was grueling, especially considering that she sometimes had to make it eight times a day.

You can imagine her delight when the partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries made it possible for a new well to be drilled near her home!

“This is a long-awaited answer to prayer,” she explained. “Clean water gives us life and safety as women. The struggle has ended for our children.”

As the village members rejoiced at the dedication service for the well, they were able to hear the Gospel, and 300 people raised their hands to pray the prayer of salvation.

A Gift that Keeps Giving

On the opposite side of Africa from Tanzania is the country of Namibia—one of the least populated countries in the world—but those who do live there have a constant struggle for water.

Forty years ago, flooding wreaked havoc in northern Namibia, uprooting families and causing residents to flee for safety. Many settled inland at what is now known as Kachenje Village. Today, however, flooding is not the issue. Instead, there simply isn’t enough water.

But God saw their struggles. With the help of our dedicated partners, we drilled a new borewell in Kachenje that one resident has dubbed “a gift that will serve generations.”

Another villager told us, “For the first time in my life, I can wake up without worrying where my family's going to fetch water. My wife no longer walks miles to distant wells. My children now have time to study and play. Even our small gardens are growing because we finally have enough water. This is more than we ever dreamed of.”
