A Search for True Love @tag1>
From Addiction to Redemption @tag2>
Growing up, Pamela didn’t know what love looked like. Her mother was distant from her and her siblings, and she felt abandoned and emotionally rejected.
And when Pamela met a man who shared his drugs with her, she just thought that that was love.
With time, though, she realized that he was just using her. Besides introducing her to the drug scene, he forced her to start prostituting herself.
And Pamela quickly found herself addicted, pregnant and a pawn in his narcotics operation. Her world turned into one of mere survival.
“I could not find any way out. My daughter had been born, and I just thought that she could end up an addict like me,” Pamela said. “And I just thought that I had been a bad mother.”
She wanted to stop doing drugs, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t finish a day without getting high. She knew deep down something had to change, but she was frustrated and lost in her addiction.
Pamela began to feel that the only way to escape was to end her life. In that moment, as a plea for help, she prayed and asked God to show her His greatness.
To her surprise, that afternoon, a Christian relative stopped by to visit.
“He said, ‘You know who sent me?’” Pamela recalled. “And I said, ‘Yes. Yes, get me out of here, just get me out of here.’”
Within days, she began her journey at Siquem Lugar del Refugio, a faith-based rehabilitation center for women in Chile who are battling addiction. It’s an outreach of Global Teen Challenge that Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Outreach, is honored to work alongside.
It was incredibly hard work, but over time Pamela opened her heart to Christ and found freedom from her addiction. In fact, today she’s studying to be a therapist so she can help others who battle the same.
And she’s become the mother she always wanted to be through encountering the love she was longing for all along—in God.
“I found my only true, great love,” Pamela said. “He filled my heart with love. I finally really know what love is.”
