Be Slow to Anger

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

We are to be slow to anger because anger does not promote the righteousness that God desires. It is our job as God’s ambassadors in the earth to not only tell people what God is like, but to show them.

We cannot merely pray for anger to disappear from our lives, but we should also use discipline and self-control to deal with it, with God’s help. Colossians 3:8 says, But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips (NIV).

Proverbs 16:32 (NIV) is one of my favorite scriptures about anger. It says, Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.

This statement is very powerful. Think about it: If a person can control their anger, they are better than a person who could capture an entire city.

Anger grieves the Holy Spirit, according to Ephesians 4:26–31. This is something we should take seriously. We may feel anger, but we are not to allow it to stay in our heart. We should not let the sun go down on our anger, or we will give the devil a foothold in our lives.

Be quick to forgive. The devil gains more ground in the lives of believers through unforgiveness than through anything else. If you are angry at anyone or about anything, let it go now so you can be strong and free from the attacks of the devil.

Prayer of the Day: Father, help me to be obedient to Your commands regarding anger. Grant me the grace to let go of anger quickly and to walk in love.
