Discovering Divine Companionship

Joyce Meyer

Have you ever felt like you were walking through life all alone? Or maybe you’ve struggled with feelings of loneliness from time to time. The truth is, when “life happens” and things don’t go as planned, it can leave us feeling lonely and even hopeless. But God has a bright future in store for you. He wants you to know that He is there to help you through all of life’s twists and turns.

I can relate to the feelings of loneliness and isolation. Nearly 50 years ago, when I first stepped out to teach God’s Word, I lost a lot of my friends and endured some lonely times. I had to cling to God and trust Him to comfort me like never before!

In John 14:26, Jesus says, But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name[in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you (AMP).

The good news is that when we begin a relationship with Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside of us. God literally gives each one of us a little piece of Himself! All of His power, strength, comfort, creativity, help, and direction are available to us 24-7.

Even during our loneliest times, the Holy Spirit is with us. Let’s take a look at a few specific ways the Holy Spirit can help us.

Comforter

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 1:3 NIV that God is the God of all comfort. The Holy Spirit, who dwells on the inside of us, knows us better than anyone else. When life is painful or lonely, He has the ability to bring strength and healing right where we hurt.

You see, the comfort of the Holy Spirit goes far beyond any ordinary kind of comfort. He is the only One who can help carry you through life’s greatest disappointments. Many times, we look to other people to help us feel better, only to discover that they don’t have everything we need. Yes, the Lord will often use others to bring us comfort but going to God first opens the door for Him to help us in the best way possible.

The next time life gets difficult or you’re feeling all alone, I encourage you to take a moment to stop and ask the Holy Spirit to comfort you right in the middle of it. No matter what you’re dealing with, He is able to take your pain and give you the comfort and encouragement to keep going.

Standby

What does it mean to have the Holy Spirit as our Standby? These days, it’s common for people to use their phones to look up all kinds of things. If my husband, Dave, wants to find out who won the baseball game last night, he can grab his phone and look it up. Or if we need to find the best way to get to where we are going, we can use it to quickly find directions.

In the same way, the Holy Spirit is with us, standing by, ready to help at a moment’s notice! He’s just waiting for us to ask Him for help. At any time, you can pray things like, “Holy Spirit, “please strengthen my emotions as I go through this day.” “Holy Spirit, please help me to feel You with me today, so I feel less alone.” “Help me!” has even become one of my favorite prayers to pray. And the more you acknowledge the Holy Spirit and ask for help, the more you’ll discover His presence and power in your daily life.

I want you to know that you can trust the Holy Spirit to be your Standby. He is the One who wants to help you the most.

Friend

God loves you so much that He has sent His Holy Spirit to be your Friend. You may be thinking that becoming friends with God seems like a difficult thing to do. But if you are a follower of Jesus, His Spirit is in you, and you are already His friend (see John 15:15).

I know when I first began to understand the amazing relationship I can have with the Holy Spirit, my world opened up and I felt like I suddenly had a new best friend to help me with anything and everything. And I know that God will do the same for you.

When we don’t know the Holy Spirit as our friend, we will be reluctant to tell Him what we need or to ask Him for help. I encourage you to talk and listen to the Holy Spirit throughout the day, asking for His direction to lead and guide you in all that you do. The more you practice doing this, the easier and more natural it will become. And as you do—as you begin to develop your relationship with Him—you will discover that He really is your best Friend.

God has given us a tremendous Gift—the Holy Spirit—to be with us through life. Remember, you’re not alone! You have a Comforter, Standby, Friend and so much more who is always ready and willing to help you. And if you let Him, He will lead and guide you into His perfect plan for your life!
