The Beauty of Righteousness

An open Bible being read for a daily devotional.

Adapted from Quiet Times with God

But to the one who does not work [that is, the one who does not try to earn his salvation by doing good], but believes and completely trusts in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited to him as righteousness (right standing with God).

Righteousness is given as a free gift to those who sincerely believe in Jesus. You don’t have to earn it; you simply receive it.

When we try to be righteous (right before God) through our own effort, it causes struggle and frustration, and it can never truly be attained. Receiving righteousness by faith in Christ allows you to rest in God and appreciate His love and mercy.

For years, I tried so hard to keep the religious rules I thought I had to follow so I could earn righteousness, but this just caused me frustration and agony. I was trying to get to God through good behavior, yet I always fell short.

Jesus invites all of us who are striving for works-based righteousness to give it up and receive God’s righteousness by putting our faith in Him. This is a better way to live, and when we choose to receive His righteousness, then His peace, rest, and joy are the natural by-products of our lives.

Prayer of the Day: Thank You, God, for the gift of righteousness through faith in Christ Jesus. Please help me rest in Your grace and stop striving through my own efforts, amen.
