Can you imagine living in the poorest country in the western hemisphere? For Bobby and Sherri Burnette, cofounders of Love A Child, Inc.,
they are happy to call Haiti home.
They made their first trip to Haiti in 1972—a trip that would forever change their lives. In 1991, they heard what they call the “cry of the poor” and trusted that God wanted them to be a part of helping these precious people.
“This little country is our ‘neighbor.’ It is only an hour and forty minutes by plane from the shores of Miami. Jesus taught us to ‘love our neighbor’ and that's why we are here,” shares the Burnettes.
In April 2008, Hand of Hope began to partner with Love A Child, reaching the people of Haiti in numerous ways. The partnership has continued to grow over the past year and reach people like Selien Jean…
A Haitian Boy and His Radio
Selien Jean’s arm had begun to swell and the pain was almost unbearable. He had fallen a week ago, but the banana leaves and old rags that the leaf doctor assured his dad would cure him weren’t helping.
Left at home, with his father working in the field and his mother at the market, Selien heard an announcement on their solar-powered radio: A medical team from Joyce Meyer Ministries had come to Haiti to provide free medical care at the Love A Child
village in Fond Parisien.
So this brave little boy decided to go all on his own…
24 Hours of Jesus
Selien heard this announcement on FM 103.5. In order to combat the negative messages of voodoo currently on Haitian radio and to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Love A Child decided to start this radio station, with the help of Christian Television Network.
Running educational programs for children, health and hygiene programs, Christian music and more, the radio station broadcasts in Creole, English, French and Spanish. Local ministers, as well as programs like Joyce’s Enjoying Everyday Life, provide teaching and encouragement every day.
And although you can listen to their station 24 hours a day online, most people in Haiti listen with their solar-powered radios. Over the last couple years, Love A Child has distributed thousands of radios, which have been generously donated by several organizations.
Saving Selien’s Arm
Thankfully, Selien’s family had one of those radios, because when the doctors at the Hand of Hope medical clinic established by Joyce Meyer Ministries examined him, they immediately knew his arm was broken. He was taken to the nearest hospital for further examination and X-rays.
The doctor said he had broken his arm "completely in two pieces" near the elbow and the blood wasn’t circulating. This meant that if Selien had not come in for medical help immediately, he would have eventually had lost his arm.
When our team took Selien home, we found his father still working the field. As the team unveiled the news about Selien’s arm and that Joyce Meyer Ministries was going to pay for the surgery to fix his arm, this poor farmer began to cry and thank God, the medical team and everyone else there!
Continued Medical Care
“The worst part of my job is at the end of the day when I have to close the doors to the clinic and leave hundreds of people standing outside,” shares Ashley Wilkins, R.N., Medical Outreach Coordinator for Joyce Meyer Ministries. But in Haiti, in partnership with Love A Child, people will be able to come back to the brand-new Jesus Healing Center anytime during the week for free medical care.
The partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries provided the start-up costs for the facility, as well as continued monthly operating costs. Now the people of Haiti have regular, quality healthcare.
Feeding the Poorest
In addition to providing medical care, Joyce Meyer Ministries also provides meals through Love A Child’s feeding outreach. Each month a container of food is shipped from the U.S. to Haiti containing 270,864 donated meals. Joyce Meyer Ministries pays for the transportation of these meals every month.
As a partner, you’re helping provide 9,028 meals daily. In 2008 alone, more than 2.1 million meals were served through this feeding site.
Thank You
Joyce Meyer Ministries partners with Love A Child to help bring many services to the people of Haiti.
When you partner with us, you are helping reach a nation desperately in need of the love of Jesus Christ.
There are still so many people to reach, so we thank you for your continued support.
