For 4 days in January of 2009, worship and praise filled the city of Bangalore—the third largest and fastest growing city in all of India.
In the span of 4 days:
- Nearly 900,000 people listened to Joyce share the Word of God at the Festival of Life
- Over 500,000 people gave their lives to Christ
- 49,000 pastors and lay people attended daily leadership sessions
Speaking Their Language
Along with powerful teaching by Joyce, festival attendees were led in worship by Delirious?
and Darlene Zschech.
Delirious? even translated the chorus of one of their most popular worship songs, Majesty, into Kannada—the local language. The response was overwhelming as hands were raised high and men and women worshipped God in their own language.
Providing Strong Encouragement
In spite of terrorist attacks throughout the country and severe Christian persecution, the people of Bangalore were ready for this type of event.
And despite the fact that only 2 percent of this large city is Christian, this area is one of the more active centers for Christians in India. Many Christian churches, Bible schools and missions organizations have their national headquarters here.
Mitchelle Rajapakse is a 21-one-year-old Bible college student in Bangalore who was really encouraged by Joyce’s message.
“For me, it’s a great opportunity to experience this kind of worship and teaching. Joyce’s message on not having to feel like I had to do all this work to please God was life-changing.”
But the festival was only the beginning…
Providing Free Medical Care
In conjunction with the Festival of Life, a medical team made up of volunteers from around the world, prepared to provide 4 days of free medical care.
In the 4 short and amazing days
- 1,707 patients were treated
- 220 dental patients received treatment and 67 teeth were pulled
- 6,821 free prescriptions were distributed
- 260 people gave their life to Christ
A Home for HIV Positive Children
When Dave and Joyce visited the children’s home in Chandrakal, the atmosphere was festive and heartwarming as the children came out to greet their guests, throwing flower petals, laughing, dancing and singing, “This is the day the Lord has made…”
Some of them had made signs, “We love living here!” “We pray for you every day,” and “Thank you for rescuing us!”
Adding to the Family
While David and Sylvia, the couple running the Chandrakal Children’s Home, have no natural children of their own, they feel as though God’s blessed them with 37 beautiful children they love with all their heart.
More than just getting them off the street, offering lifesaving medicine and providing a safe environment, David and Sylvia are giving these children a home—a family where they can give and receive love.
